Homily Note Points

Past few weeks - We are God's "Secret Agents"
This Sunday (1) World Marriage Day
(2) World Day of the Sick (February 11th)

Word of God Today:
1. Isaiah - awareness of his sins held Isaiah back from hearing God's call and responding - he needed God's action / grace (God's life force) mediated through the live coal

2. Paul, when he was still Saul, was proud of his accomplishments, his religious discipline and devotion, but his pride made him blind and deaf to what God was doing in Jesus.
To get his attention, Jesus had to knock him down and blind him - he confessed and repented, and the Lord sent Ananias to lay hands on him and restore his sight. Now, Paul was able and eager to respond to Jesus and follow Him.

3. People loved to listen to Jesus but were not ready to commit to following Him - Jesus had to get their attention, beginning with the fishermen, in a way that fishermen would understand. Seeing the miraculous catch of fish, they were now ready to leave their work and follow Jesus.

So also with us.... God calls us all to be his secret agents in the world so He can use our strengths and talents but also our weaknesses to shine the power of his love, mercy, and pece through us to others. Jesus wants to set everyone free to hear and to reply to God's call.

Marriages living 50 / 50 = 25% couples
Jesus calls couples to be 100 / 100 = 100% couples

The sick and wounded may also be held back unless them embrace their suffering with Jesus and make it their personal spiritual sacrifice to God; as Jesus did.
Alternatively, Jesus wants to heal those who He calls to be his witnesses.

The divine life of the Most Holy Trinity is poured into us beginning at Baptism.
All human beings are children of God, but most do not realize or understand this.
In Baptism, God the Father adopts us and brings us into communion with the Most Holy Trinity, and as we accept to grow in faith, we enter more fully into this communion.

Confession / the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation is a 2nd Baptism, renewing us in this spiritual adoption and restoring our lost innocence again. Each time we confess to Jesus before the priest, we take responsibility for our life and for our sins, opening the gate of our heart to receive God's forgiveness, mercy, and love; freeing us to hear and respond to Jesus.

At Confirmation, we were filled with the Holy Spirit, the personal life force of God. The Holy Spirit reminds us of Jesus' words, helps us to understand, and strengthens us to follow Him.

When we receive Jesus in Holy Communion, we receive a transfusion of the divine life force of love of the Most Holy Trinity. Following Jesus, we become more like Him.

Jubilee 2025 - This special year is an invitation and an opportunity for RENEWAL in intimacy and communion with God, with the Most Holy Trinity, renewing our enthusiasm and courage to live with God, for God, and as children of the Father.

Homily Note Points (from Sunday morning)

You may recall how the last two weekends I may have surprised you by saying that we are, all of us, God's "secret agents" in the world. In face of all the world's troubles, from wars to exploitation, and famine to pandemics, we naturally ask God "Why?" and "What are You doing?" Jesus makes it clear that God the Father's one and only strategy in response to all our world's troubles is to send his Son Jesus, and now, Jesus sends us out into all the dark places of life as his secret agents.

We are "God-bearers" and "Bearers of God's Divine Light", which we bring with us wherever we go, and it is God dwelling within us, who brings peace where there is war, harmony into discord, solutions to problems, putting people first. You may very well ask "But how exactly are we to do this?"

When I was a young priest, in a short period of time, I celebrated three funerals for young people - high school or college students - who died under suspicious circumstances, perhaps taking their own lives. At the wakes, there were lots of large posters on which hundreds of their fellow students and friends had written love notes like: "You saved me." "You were there for me." "You always understood me." In other words, they were perceived as life savers.

What I was able to understand is that these very good human beings had been continually there for others, listening, accompanying, encouraging, giving of themselves unconditionally. Then, what happened? Their only fault was that they forgot, or didn't know how to go to God to replenish their life energy. They gave and gave of themselves until there were completely depleted and fell into darkness.

God doesn't want that to happen to human beings. Our Father in heaven loves us and doesn't want us to carry the weight of the whole world on our shoulders, because Jesus his Son is already doing that. God is God and I am not. I am a sinner whom God loves, and as the Lord said to Saint Paul, his power shines most clearly and wonderfully in our weakness. We need to constantly have our life force replenished by connecting with God every day and often during the day and night.

This is the meaning of this Feast of the Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple. When we look at Jesus, at whatever stage of his life, we see two things. Jesus shows us something about God, what God is truly like, and He also shows us something about ourselves, who and what we are.

Looking at Jesus in the Temple today, we see that God loves us so much that He wants to be with us and became a human being, a baby, in order to share everything about our life with us. God trusts us so much that He is willing to be a helpless little Baby and is glad for us to take Him into our arms and hold Him, and love Him. That's what God is truly like. Also, He trust us to hold Him and not drop Him or hurt Him in any way. We can do this, we can take Him and hold Him and come to love Him. We are capable of love and friendship even with God.

God has made us sensitive and capable of noticing people around us who may be in need, especially when they are going through a hard time; not to save or rescue them or fix anything, but just to be there, to care, to listen, and walk with them a little part of the way. God wants us to know that He designed us to give to one another and to receive from one another in ways like this. This is what Pope Francis is constantly talking about, and he calls it the "Joy of the Gospel", the "joy of the encounter", which is synodality, walking with others and truly listening with our whole being. As we learn to do this, we discover something amazing: God is already present in others even in their trouble, and as we listen to them, God who is in them blesses us in mysterious ways; while, at the same time, God who is in us, also blesses those with whom we decide to walk and listen.

This is the meaning of this Feast of the Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple: we are God-bearers, bearing the Light of God within us. We are God's living temples and living tabernacles, carrying God and his Light - which is Jesus - wherever we go. That is why we are here in Church together, and why it is so important for us to be here every Sunday; so that God the Most Holy Trinity can replenish our life force and energy to love with their own Divine Life. In Holy Communion we receive a transfusion of the Divine Life with is in God. We carry nothing less than God within us was He sends us back into our lives, to our families, our marriages, our work, our school, our neighbourhoods, and all the dark places in the world into which God desires to shine his Divine Light.

Homily Note Points (from Sunday morning)

Saturday, January 25th - Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul
2 weekends bookending it are the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
Why pray for unity? Because we are divided into different traditions... with lots of other causes of division... See how in families there may be a policy of not talking about politics, religion, or sex, or whatever... Why? To avoid arguments and divisions.

We all feel the heaviness of our times... a world troubled and divided by wars, economic upheaval, instability of jobs, diseases, climate change, gender confusion, uncertainty, and many other troubles... making our times often dark....

Pope Francis has in prayer discerned a need in humanity for HOPE and has declared a jubilee year - Jubilee 2025 - with the theme "Pilgrims of Hope".
In our Roman Catholic Tradition, every 25th year is a regular Jubilee: 2000, 2025, 2050, etc. You may recall how ten years ago, Pope Francis gave us the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy in 2015-2016 in response to his observation of divisions in our Church between those resembling the Pharisees of Jesus' day... concerned, when not obsessed, with identifying who the sinners are by constantly harping on the commandments and the rules, on the one hand; and on the other hand, those who follow in Jesus' steps and emphacize rather the mercy of God. Pope Francis went so are as to declare, often, and instructing clergy that the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation - Confession - is not a torture chamber, nor like going to a psychotherapist.... Rather, it is simply going to the priest and declaring before God "Lord, I am a sinner." and then receiving God's forgiveness and mercy in the formula of absolution.

In Jesus, God is offering to all of humanity his friendship, friendship with the Holy Trinity. The Bible, especially the O.T., calls us to "know the ways of the Lord", that is, to share in God's love and life. How do we do this? We do it through the graces God offers everyone in the virtues of FAITH, HOPE, and CHARITY. Because these graces are virtues, we must USE them in order to ACTIVATE them. I will now describe them.

(Dramatically holding onto the lectern / pulpit / ambo...) FAITH is HOLDING ON, CLINGING TO GOD, no matter what happens, or how I feel, or what people say....

As we use our faith by clinging to God - going to Church, praying, opening the Bible and reading, meditating on the Mysteries of the Rosary, over time, we become familiar with God and his ways. We notice how God consoles us in distress, comforts us in our pain, sends people to us in our loneliness, lifts up our drooping spirits....

As we become more familiar with the ways of the Lord, we come to know that we can trust Him and rely on Him... and this is the virtue of HOPE, which we use and activate every time we turn our will to trusting in the Lord and anticipate his ongoing help and love.

Practicing Faith and Hope develops in our spirit an ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE, which is actually love of God, CHARITY. We come to love God and want to please Him. The daily quality test of our love for God is in the quality of our love of neighbour, especially the neighbour who is most difficult to love.

The people of Israel in Ezra and Nehemiah's day lived some 4 to 5 centuries before Jesus. The people had been carried off into exile on 3 separate occasions and their Temple had been destroyed. Now, God had brought them back to their own land and had helped them to rebuild the Temple. They rediscovered the Word of God, and on this day, from early morning until noon - for 5 to 6 hours - the people stood and listened attentively to the Word of God and the explanations given to them. That is a lot longer than the mere hour of duration of our Sunday Mass....

On that occasion, as the people listened to the Word of the Lord, there were tears. Tears of sadness as they realized how they had failed to measure up and regretted having turned away from the Lord; but there were also tears of joy as they heard once again about the love and goodness of the Lord and his abundant mercy and blessing to them.

This is the movement and the flow that happens for us at every Sunday Liturgy and Holy Mass. We gather together before the Lord and turn over our burdens to God and his mercy. As the bread and wine are prepared, the Holy Spirit helps us call to mind all that we carry within us and care about: our weakness and sins, our fears and hopes, our plans and disappointments, and all the holy desires God puts into our spirit....

As Jesus offered Himself perfectly once to the Father at the Last Supper and on the Cross, so, now, Jesus helps us make a personal offering of ourselves, of our own life, to the Father, and He joins our offering of ourselves to his offering of Himself to the Father.

At Holy Communion, the Father gives us Jesus his Son as our nourishment and strength for the journey of life, to sustain us and make us more and more like Jesus and Mary.

Then, at the end of Mass, Jesus sends us back out into our lives and into the world as his SECRET AGENTS of God's love, mercy, and peace, so that He can manifest to the whole world his power of love, mercy and peace through us to others who also need Him.

As radio, TV, and cell phone towers transmit signals and content; so too, God wants to transmit in us and through us the power of his love, mercy, and life. How do we participate in this work of God? One example is how every day we may notice things that are not right: words, gestures, behaviours and actions that seem to be wrong or even evil. For each and every one of these, we can pray within ourselves: "Lord, have mercy on him. Lord, have mercy on her. Lord, have mercy on them. Lord, pour your live into them; shine your light on them."

Even a thousand times a day, we can do this, and act as God's intercessors for other human beings; just as Jesus is constantly doing or each and every one of us!

Homily Note Points (from Sunday morning)

Cana wine... still linked to marriage after 2000 years
Jesus' 1st sign - making 600 liters of wine from water
It's about a wedding banquet - an image of Heaven
Who got married? God and humanity in Jesus...
See God's total commitment to abundance of life for humanity...

What spoiled this? How did we get to the mess we're in?
Adam & Eve = our mortal, human condition...
God's plan from the start: offering us friendship...
God our Creator designed us capable of friendship...
Friendship with God our Creator and with one another...
Friendship cannot be bought or coerced, only given & received...

The world is a mess. What is God doing about it?
God's only plan is to make us his "secret agents"...
Secret agents of his kingdom to extend his reign of love & peace...
But who am I, who are we, to do this? We are weak & sinful.
It's not about us, but about God's power working through our weakness.
Our models are Jesus and Mary.

Though Son of God, as man, Jesus hesitated about when to launch into his public ministry to announce the good news of God's love. His Mother Mary gave Him a nudge by informing Him that the bride and groom were out of wine.
We too, in our uncertainty in light of our weakness and powerlessness also hesitate, but the Lord calls us to offer Him our weakness and trust in Him, and fully expect Him to manifest his power through us to others.

At times, the loneliest place on Earth may very well be in our own families, where we may find ourselves suffering in silence, with no one having even a clue of what we are going through; leaving us feeling that no one cares. Well, God cares, always has, and always will. God ever accompanies us through life.

It is precisely in those moments of weakness and pain that God wants to let his power shine through us and our weakness and accomplish wonderful things.
That is why Jesus commanded, not suggested, that we love our enemies, forgive those who hurt us, do good to those who harm us, and pray for those who are against us or irritate us. There is NO OTHER WAY for the love and mercy of God to enter into our world and bring about the peace of his Kingdom.
We are God's SECRET AGENTS, like it or not.

This is a good place for us to be, in church together, where we bring our burden and the offering of ourselves to the Altar, to God our Father.
He is very pleased that we are here, and pleased with our offering, as we offer ourselves together with Jesus offering Himself, to the Father.
Once gain, our Father will give us his Son Jesus in Holy Communion; so that the MARRIAGE between God and us can continue: with the power of God's LOVE at work in and through our human weakness and sufferings.
