“The Lord is near to all who call on him!”

The young boy Samuel heard in the night a voice calling his name. He did not know that it was the Lord calling him. He learned this from the Lord’s priest Eli, who served in the Temple of the Lord. Eli was not a good man and displeased the Lord. Notably, he failed to discipline his two sons. They abused the Lord’s Temple and had no respect for God or for others. Still, Eli did a good thing in guiding young Samuel to learn to listen to the voice of the Lord.

Have you ever heard the voice of the Lord? I haven’t; at least, not with my ears. What’s really important here is not whether or not we hear the voice of the Lord with our ears, but whether we are even interested in listening for the Lord’s voice within our spirit. We all have voices inside of us: our own conscience, voices we remember, like those of our parents; the voice of our spouse, of friends and relatives, or even voices we dread, like that of our boss. Most important among all the voices echoing inside of us is the gentle, quiet voice of God.

“Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will!”

Dear brothers and sisters in Jesus, I should get down on my knees and ask your forgiveness for the neglect of all the pastors and priests you have ever known; forgiveness for all the ways in which we have failed to coach you in learning to listen, to discern and recognize, and to obey the voice of the Lord… deep down within your spirit. The Holy Spirit is close to every human being, whether we realize it or not. This is in part because God is our Creator, and it is the will of the Father alone which brought us into being and which sustains us in being. Without the stable and loving will of the Father that we should exist, we would simply disappear without a trace, without even a puff of smoke. We would simply vanish.

“The Lord is near to all who call on him!”

The fact that we exist is evidence that God exists, and that He also wants us to exist. In the Bible’s perspective, our very breath is not our own, but it is God’s breath which He breathes into us. Further evidence of the great and unconditional love with which God loves us is the free will with which we have all been endowed. Our free will is a very great gift indeed.

However, we don’t always like the fact that we have free will. We would much prefer God to wipe out in a single stroke every hint of evil, violence, pain, poverty, and suffering in the world. Isn’t that right? Hello? We don’t realize that if God did as we wish and wiped out all evil doers, illness, violence, natural disasters, pain, and suffering, we would no longer be free. We would simply be a bunch of robots, programmed machines, like ChatGPT, with no free will. Family, love, friendship, and caring for others, especially those in need; none of that could exist if there were no free will, no possibility of freely deciding to make acts of love and caring. Would you really want to live in a world like that? I would most definitely not want to live in that world.

“Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will!” 

Sadly, there is another reason for me to get on my knees and ask for your forgiveness on my behalf and on behalf of all the clergy you have ever known. It’s not just because we have failed to coach you in learning to know God personally and to relate to God personally every day. In addition to this, we have given you the impression that all you need to do to enter into Heaven when you die is to be a good person; to avoid committing crimes, and to do some good deeds. This is all good, but it is only part of what God expects of us. Our Creator cares a great deal about his Creation, and especially about all his human children.

If we don’t freely decide to learn how to also care a great deal about God’s Creation, and especially about all of his human children; then how can we possible stand to live in God’s company for all of eternity in Heaven? At times, aren’t we already allergic to people who, we may think, are too holy, too devout or too good. Such people give us to feel a bit uncomfortable. Unless we change, it won’t get any better in Heaven; in fact, it will only get worse. We won’t want to be in Heaven.

A few minutes ago, we heard St. Paul declare that in order to be in sync with God, we need to hold our bodies and the bodies of others in great respect; even reverence. That means there is no room for sexual hanky panky; no room at all. More important than this, though, is that God is calling each and every baptized person to do as John, Andrew, and Simon did. We are all to follow Jesus and become his missionary disciples. We may feel weak, imperfect, and fragile, yes, and that is what we offer, but the Lord brings to bear his power, holiness, and divine mercy; so in this partnership, God can do wonders and in fact does wonders through us. Jesus wants to fill us with the life and love of the Holy Spirit and send us out into the world to bring his good news to all those poor people who are starving and thirsting for the good news that God loves them unconditionally.

In our day, we have no excuse. Anyone can own a Bible as well as a copy of the Catechism. Anyone with a computer or smart phone with internet can read the Bible, the Catechism, and even listen to the Liturgy of the Hours and read along. The Lord, in the Word He addresses to us today, is testing us, scrutinizing our spirits, to bring to light our willingness to let Him work in us and bring about his holy will in us, for our own good and for the good of others. We have everything at our fingertips.

“Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will!”

“Mary Mother of God, St. Joseph, help us walk in the steps of Jesus. O my Jesus, I trust in You! Thank You; You who are God, the Father, + the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

In silence now, the Holy Spirit helps us to unite our offering of ourselves to that of Jesus….

“You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek!”

My sisters! My brothers! What is your relationship with the Good God, with God the Father? What is your relationship with Jesus? What has been your experience of the Holy Spirit? What has been your experience of Holy Communion in the Body and Blood of Christ?

For my part, I recall having been impressed by the image of Jesus in his manger near Mary and Joseph when I was around 7 years old. Then the image of Jesus suffering on the cross touched me a lot. At my confirmation, I was 8 years old, and I remember feeling a presence next to me, but I did not yet know that it was the Holy Spirit, the Defender.

The next day, when I confessed my sins for the first time, I felt the love and forgiveness of God. On the third day, when I received Jesus in my first Holy Communion, I felt a warmth of love in my child’s heart. All these experiences were not yet conscious; I was only a little boy. I only became aware of all these experiences 20 years later, while I was on a weekend retreat for young adults, when the priest invited us to recall our experiences of God and to reflect on them so that we might begin to understand their meaning.

So far, those were my early experiences of Jesus. Now, for God the Father, at 12 years old I noticed that, at my age, one day Jesus remained alone in the Temple. When Mary and Joseph found Him after 3 days, asking Him why He had caused them so much worry, Jesus answered: “Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s business?” Suddenly I became aware of God the Father and that He is also my Father.

A year later, in my first year of high school – at the time that was 8^th grade – I was 13 years old, and they had us begin to pray a prayer to the Holy Spirit for the beginning and success of Vatican Council II in Rome. It was September, 1962. That’s when I became aware of the Holy Spirit and I began to pray the Holy Spirit more during the following years. You can see from these impressions I’m sharing that God reveals Himself to us personally, and it takes time.

Let’s have a look now at what we have heard this morning from the Word of God. First, we see Abram who, after a military victory, gives thanks to God for his success and makes Him in thanksgiving an offering of one tenth of all his profit from the military campaign.

Second, we hear Saint Paul give witness to Jesus’ testament: before He dies, Jesus leaves us this mysterious meal in which He gives us his own life as nourishment: his Body and Blood through the instruments of the bread and wine to be transformed by his words of blessing.

Third, we see Jesus responding to his Apostles who are concerned for the crowd famished after following Jesus for three days. Jesus said the blessing on the 5 loaves and 2 fish, thereby accelerating their natural multiplication which normally takes place in the fields and in the sea. Jesus demonstrates that He is the Creator.

God loves us, and He invites us to trust in Him, to give Him thanks for all the benefits we receive in everyday life. The Father invites us to trust in Jesus his Son, the Christ, our Lord, and to trust also in the Holy Spirit. God, the Most Holy Trinity, unceasingly offers us life, but never imposes. It is up to us to accept. When I open my spirit in prayer, I accept the Presence of God in me. When I confess my sins to Jesus’ priest, Jesus listens, counsels me, and forgives me. When I receive Holy Communion, Jesus gives Himself to me to nourish me. At every moment, the Holy Spirit shines his light in me, reminds me of Jesus’ words, and helps me to understand.

God the Holy Trinity is our Creator who knows us, loves us, and reveals Himself to us, and it is often in silence that God comes to gently touch our spirit in our depths within us. We need to make silence within us as often as possible. Let us make this interior silence; and gently give this example to our children to help them to also come to know the Good God.

“You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek!”

Jesus will show us the Father; we will taste the love of God for us. During the Mass, the priest lends his voice to Jesus who prays his Father and offers his life to the Father for us. By and by, in the love of God the Father and of Jesus, the Holy Spirit will manifest Himself to us.

“Mary Queen of Peace, pray for us. St. Joseph, pray for us. St. Suzanne, pray for us. Father, we give You thanks. O my Jesus, I trust in You! Holy Spirit, enlighten us. Thank You; You who are God, the Father, + the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

In silence now, the Holy Spirit continues to help us to know Jesus and our heavenly Father.

How can we receive the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives? - June 5th, 2022 - Pentecost - LSM in OLF Parish Church

Homily Outline 

Almost 2,000 years after Pentecost, how is it that the world has not yet been completely transformed? Jesus did not come to reform the Roman Empire, nor the Jewish Temple, nor even the Council of the Sanhedrin.... He came to meet people, one person at a time... including you and me.... 

So, how do we welcome within us the power of the Holy Spirit?

Lesson #1. Part A - Our prayers, our requests, must be specific and concrete.

        Jesus always asked people who were suffering, even when their trouble seemed obvious: "What do you want me to do for you?" Jesus is still asking us the same question.

Part B - Jesus commands us to act, not to remain passive.

        Once a person had concretely expressed their request, Jesus did something, and then He told them to act, to also do something, to go from being passive to being active: "Get up, pick up your mat, and go home." "Go and show yourself to the priests and offer the prescribed sacrifice." "Go and sin no more." Etc.

        Jesus expects us to do the same as soon as we have expressed to Him our prayer. So, we must "do something" in connection to our request: visit a parent, call someone we've been neglecting, help a neighbour, rescue a person in distress... in other words, put aside concern about ourselves and make room for others through gestures and concrete actions.

Lesson #2. Part A - Don't focus on the traffic coming in the opposite direction - don't obsess over our sins, our failures, or the great darkness oppressing us.

        While driving at night it is very dangerous to focus our eyes on the lights of cars coming in the opposite direction... we would be at great risk to have a head-on collision and everyone dies. By analogy, neither must we focus the eyes of our spirit on all that is our sins, our failures, our fears, or all that is the "great darkness" in our life. The devil ever seeks to paralyze us by getting us to be obsessed with the darkness....

Part B - On the contrary, Jesus commands us: "Look at Me!"

        As He met people who were struggling with their misery, Jesus said to them: "Look at Me!" In other words, to free us from the darkness, to be able to forgive us our sins, to at times heal us from our illnesses or, if not, to give us the strength to endure them... for all that Jesus wants to do for us, He must first get our attention.

        Then, He needs us to have complete trust and confidence in Him and in the love of God our Father, and in the power of the Holy Spirit. Faith is not a feeling or sentiment, but simply a decision. I decide to put my trust and confidence in Jesus, and then, I leave my confidence in Him and expect to receive his reply, whatever that will be. From that point on, my prayer remains: "Show me, Lord Jesus, what You want, what You are saying to me, what You are doing." 

Lesson #3. Part A - Praise the Lord and give Him thanks!

        We Catholic Christians of Québec and Canada, are an "aweful bunch" or "in an aweful mess", in the sense that we live and behave as though we are ashamed of our faith, and ashamed of God. We never speak of God, or of Jesus, or of our faith out loud. Especially not in our family, or at school or college or university, or at work, or with friends... or anywhere.

        When you get down to it, we've closed the gates of our heart, of our mind, of our spirit, and of our life to God. Why then should we be surprised that God seems silent or absent. We have banished Him from our existence. Some have said that God is a gentleman, and He respects our decisions, even to the point of leaving us alone. Do we really want that?

Part B - Jesus calls and attracts us... and then He sends us.... 

        God is ever attracting us to Himself. The Father sent us his Son in Jesus to get our attention. Jesus invites us to listen to Him and to follow Him. 

        The Holy Spirit inspires us, attracts us to go to Sunday Mass... The Spirit assembles us to form together the People of God. There, God speaks to us in a heart-to-heart with his living Word... Jesus nourishes us with his mysterious "divine meal" - giving Himself to us in his Body and Blood. Then, strengthened by this mysterious Presence of God within us, Jesus sends us out into the world as his missionary disciples: "Go in my peace! Proclaim the Good News! Go make disciples by sharing with them all that I have given you. I am with you until the end!"

 “O my Jesus, I trust in You. Immaculate Mother Mary, pray for us. St. Joseph, pray for us. We give praise to You, O God, the Father, + the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

In silence now, the Holy Spirit continues to pour the Divine Mercy deeply into our spirit..

The media are saturated with news about the bones of some 215 indigenous children uncovered in a common grave at a former residential school for indigenous children. This media attention stands in sharp contrast with the secrecy in which these children disappeared. Taken from their families, each of these children’s lives obviously had no value in the eyes of their school. This is doubly tragic. 

Our society expects to find more hidden graves elsewhere. This shocking discovery exposes the contempt that indigenous peoples have generally suffered at the hands of our whole society since the time of our first colonists from Europe five centuries ago. All the treaties and agreements made between our governors since the beginning of our colonies with indigenous peoples have generally been violated or ignored. This is an extraordinary injustice.

On his part, our God keeps his covenants. The blood of sacrificial animals was sprinkled on the people to signify the seriousness of the covenant offered by God. If one or other party broke his part of the covenant, then his blood was to be shed. Whenever the people of Israel were unfaithful to the covenant, their blood was indeed shed by the sword of their enemies.

Seeing our incapacity to be faithful, God let the blood of his own Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, be shed on the soldiers’ courtyard, on the way of the cross, and finally on the cross on Calvary. Jesus shed his blood to the very last drop. Jesus’ passion and death made visible the love of God for us, for each and every one of us. The Most Holy Trinity hopes that seeing Jesus on the cross our hard heart will break; then God’s love can penetrate into our heart to heal us and fill us with divine life.

By our Baptism the divine life of the Trinity seeks to replace the evil and selfishness which tends to destroy humanity. By our Confirmation the Holy Spirit strengthens us to dare believe in the love of God and trust in Him. By the Penance and Reconciliation of Confession Jesus erases our sins and renews in us this new life in God. As a mother feeds her baby at her breast, in each Holy Communion Jesus gives us a transfusion of the divine life He has by the love of the Father in the Holy Spirit.

It is high time for us to no longer treat God with contempt, this God who in Jesus shows Himself to be so sincere, so vulnerable, so merciful, so completely given and so generous. It is up to us to decide every day to make a return of love to God the Holy Trinity in prayer and devotion; while at the same time making courageous and generous efforts day by day to love our neighbor as ourselves, especially those who are most difficult to love.

If we want to be forgiven and to live in peace, we must forgive all those who offend us. God never tires of forgiving us; in our turn, let us not tire of forgiving others their sins and offenses against us.

God, this Most Holy Trinity who created us, who saves us in Jesus, and who sanctifies us in the Holy Spirit, this God who is the source of the fire which makes the stars burn, this God makes himself so discrete towards us, in all tenderness and mercy…. God quietly respects our freedom, all the while hoping that from one moment to the next, from day to day, we will freely choose to live, to behave, and to love as children of God….

come give to us, O saving Lord, the Bread of Life to eat!

Dear brothers, dear sisters, let us contemplate for a few minutes in silence this Real Presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament reserved in the Tabernacle and who in a few minutes will once again be present on the Altar in his Body and Blood risen from the dead and alive under the appearance of bread and wine.

Now for 4 minutes in silence we will contemplate and adore the Most Holy Trinity.

Universal Prayer

Priest’s Introduction                      To God the Father almighty, dear brothers and sisters, may every prayer of our heart be directed, for his will it is that all humanity should be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth.

For those who, due to the Pandemic, are still preparing to celebrate Baptism, Reconciliation, Confirmation, Holy Eucharist, and Marriage; that they may find joy in preparing; so that their life in Christ may continue to grow, we pray to You, Lord.      R. Lord, make us missionary disciples.

That young people may find much joy in seeking You, Jesus, Bread of Life; by living the Gospel may they help to renew the world, we pray to You, Lord.      R. Lord, make us missionary disciples.

In union with Pope Francis’ worldwide intention for June, we pray “that all those who suffer may find their way in life, allowing themselves to be touched by the Heart of Jesus", and for the Church in China, we pray to You, Most Holy Trinity.           R. Lord, make us missionary...

For all victims of sexual abuse or violence, for their families and communities; for all those who are hungry, thirsty, naked, elderly, lonely, sick, in trouble, in prison, refugees, abandoned, or suffering injury or loss due to calamities, we pray to You, Sacred Heart of Jesus.      R. Lord, make us...

For those who are angry, violent, abusive, or in any way disturbed or making trouble for others; that your Most Holy Body & Blood may revive them in body and soul, we pray to You Lord…          R.

For Humanity during this Covid-19 Pandemic – especially the unemployed or oppressed – that all may find peace in your Holy Body & Blood, we pray to You Lord….  R. Lord, make us missionary...

That married couples may grow closer through trust in your Holy Body & Blood; that families may support each other with their faith in God; and that engaged couples preparing for marriage and family life may make room for You, we pray to You, Lord.  R. Lord, make us missionary disciples.

That men called by You, Lord, to serve as priests may with courage and trust in You say “Yes!” to your call as Mary and Joseph did, and that the shepherds of our souls may govern generously and wisely the flock entrusted to them by You, we pray to You, Sacred Heart of Jesus.    R.

That our governments may respect parents as first educators of their children, and that all children and families in trouble, and all who suffer because of the weather, the Pandemic, or other troubles, may find comfort in your love, Father, given to all the Body & Blood of Jesus, we pray to You...  R.

That our communities, as we emerge from isolation, may observe the health measures and bear witness with great devotion to the Body & Blood of Christ, we pray to You Lord….              R.

For our own personal intentions....

Priest’s Prayer                    O God, our refuge and our strength, hear the prayers of your church, for you yourself are the source of all devotion, and grant, we pray, that what we ask in faith we may truly obtain, through Christ our Lord.                          R. Amen.
