Our God weeps for us in our sufferings but also for all the slaughtered innocents. The Lord heals the humble. “You are my refuge, Lord; with deliverance You surround me!” - February 10th-11th, 2024 - 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Transfiguration of Our Lord Parish

In the "New Covenant" made by our Creator God with humanity, as reported in Jeremiah 31:31-34, every human being can know God from within - because the Holy Spirit is revealing our Creator to all who are willing to know the Lord and trust in Him. We can still help each other along the way; so please feel free to share with others these homilies and your own personal faith in God through Jesus Christ. G.S.

What are the offerings that we bring to God? What is the meaning of "HOSANNAH!" We acclaim God for his greatness and praise Him, while at the same time calling upon Him to rescue us in our distress.... "HOSANNAH!" MP3 version

“You are my refuge, Lord; with deliverance You surround me!”

Leviticus is the third book in the Bible; it comes after Genesis – which relates how God created the universe as our home and then created us human beings to live in friendship with Him on this Earth. God allowed our first parents to be tempted by the rebellious angel, the devil, who appeared as a lying snake. God permits us also to be tempted and tested in order to allow us to develop character by choosing to trust in God more than in anyone or anything.

Our first parents chose to stop trusting in God. The deadly consequences since then have been frustration in our labours, pain, suffering, illness, and death. In his mercy, God promised to save us from this distress. This promise was transmitted from generation to generation by the practice of faith in God. Then came Noah, and later Abraham and Sarah. Their son Isaac, had two sons, Esau and Jacob. God gave Jacob the name of Israel. He had twelve sons with two wives. The ten brothers were jealous of their half brother, Joseph, because their father loved him; so, they sold him into slavery. God used that evil act to bring blessing on the whole family.

“You are my refuge, Lord; with deliverance You surround me!”

God was with Joseph. He was a holy man who prayed and tried to please God in all things. God’s favour on Joseph lifted him up to Pharaoh’s right hand, and he organized the kingdom to be prepared when years of famine struck the whole Middle East. In this way, his brothers came to Egypt to buy grain and eventually their whole family, with their elderly father Jacob, came to Egypt. Joseph and his brothers were reconciled when he forgave them and told them how God had used their evil deed in the past to save the whole family from starvation in time of famine.

Exodus comes after Genesis. It tells how after four centuries Egypt became jealous and afraid of Israel, because God blessed his people and made them numerous. Pharaoh did not know God as his predecessors had known God. He took harsh measures to oppress Israel. God raised up Moses as leader, but first he had to be tested. He got in trouble and had to escape. In Midian, he met a family, married one of the daughters, and became a shepherd. God revealed himself to Moses in a bush that burned but was not consumed. He sent him back to Egypt to go deliver his people who were crying out to God. God worked wonders through Moses and forced Pharaoh to let his people go. Their liberation from the captivity of Egypt is called their exodus.

“You are my refuge, Lord; with deliverance You surround me!”

Leviticus comes after Genesis and Exodus. Through Moses, God gave his people the Law with rules to show people how to live a life pleasing to God, and how to avoid doing evil, which cuts people off from God’s blessings. The people needed rules because they were so headstrong and reluctant to follow the Lord’s ways. The purpose of the Law was to point out to people their sins, the ways in which they did evil and were displeasing to God, and how to repent.

“You are my refuge, Lord; with deliverance You surround me!”

God told his people to isolate lepers to contain the infection and stop it from spreading. Modern medicine still uses isolation to contain infections. God told them how to reintegrate the sick after they recovered. Jesus came to heal the sick, wounded, or those possessed by demons. Jesus came to reconcile us to his Father by forgiving our sins. We are complex living beings. Our mind, heart, soul, and body are intricately connected. Any trouble in one part affects our whole being. Pornography is a deadly plague infecting all of humanity today. Even children are being exposed. Porn perverts what God made beautiful. Human sexuality is designed to love and serve the dignity of the other person. Using it to selfishly seek pleasure infects us and blinds us to the dignity of others. We no longer respect others and become addicted. We are estranged from God and others, and we close ourselves off from God’s friendship in Jesus. We are sick.

“You are my refuge, Lord; with deliverance You surround me!”

One evil act leads to another. Porn leads to promiscuity, which can cause unwanted or unplanned pregnancies, which in turn can lead to an abortion. Today, there are 73 million live births a year worldwide, but the same number of abortions. All together, we are responsible for a slaughter of the innocents, and it is all because we are not concerned about pleasing God, because we do not trust in God. We are not trying to know his ways, or to walk in his ways.

“You are my refuge, Lord; with deliverance You surround me!”

Our Father in heaven is sorry to see us suffering, and his Son Jesus, human like us, weeps. God is not passive but active. Through confession, God restores our lost innocence and also our communion with Him and each other. Confession and God’s forgiveness in the absolution given by the priest remove the causes of our sinful infections. In the Anointing of the Sick, God heals our bodies, minds, and hearts from serious illness and the consequences of various evils. God’s grace helps us to know and to walk in his ways, to renounce evil, and to choose good.

“You are my refuge, Lord; with deliverance You surround me!”

Mary Mother of God, St. Joseph, help us walk in the steps of Jesus. O my Jesus, I trust in You! Thank You; You who are God, the Father, + the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

In silence now, the Holy Spirit helps us to unite our offering of ourselves to that of Jesus….

What are the offerings that we bring to God? What is the meaning of "HOSANNAH!" We acclaim God for his greatness and praise Him, while at the same time calling upon Him to rescue us in our distress.... "HOSANNAH!" MP3 version

“Sing to the Lord; praise the Lord! He has delivered the needy from the hands of evildoers!”

Here is Jesus always near to us to encourage us to put aside all fear in the face of evil men and their terrible actions in the world. What is the condition of our spirits in the face of all the threats multiplying all over the world today? Whether it be the Russian aggression in Ukraine, or acts of war or violence in the Middle East, in Africa or Asia, or else the virulent persecution of Christians in general and of Catholics in particular all over the world; what is our attitude, what is our prayer, and what is our response?

“Sing to the Lord; praise the Lord! He has delivered the needy from the hands of evildoers!”

Just as dramatic are the constantly changing conditions of our world economies, of the Covid pandemic and other health threats, as well as the great climatic challenges. What will our living conditions be in the future? Even more pertinently or essentially, what is our attitude towards God in the face of all these disasters in our world? Are we ashamed of our God, or are we able to recognize his Presence and action in our world and in our lives? When others are defiant towards us and our faith, do we feel pressured to deny the Lord Jesus “before humans”, or are we ready to declare ourselves for Jesus and to acknowledge Him “before humans”?

“Sing to the Lord; praise the Lord! He has delivered the needy from the hands of evildoers!”

In the face the daily challenges of life and the unending and unavoidable changes which life brings us every day, are we inclined to let ourselves be crushed and discouraged? And yet, we are neither alone nor abandoned. We have only to open the Bible to the Book of Psalms to find a complaint perfectly suited to express the anguish of our heart, the confusion of our mind, and the distress of our soul. As we pray the complaint, God hears and permeates us with his grace.

“Lord, in your steadfast love, answer me. It is for your sake that I have borne reproach, that shame has covered my face. I have become a stranger to my kindred, an alien to my mother’s children. It is zeal for your house that has consumed me; the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.”

“Lord, in your steadfast love, answer me!”

Jesus declares it clearly: God our Father sees us and watches closely over us. He sees all that happens to us, and He permits all that happens in the world, far away, as well as close by. We are not ready for Heaven; that is why God permits that all these trials purify the intentions of our heart; in order to make room in us for all the love of God and of our neighbour.

As well, we are weak, and we need these trials which provoke us to resist the evil and the temptations, and to fight against all that is evil. God knows very well that it is only by our resistance and our struggle against all that is evil, that we can be strengthened to endure.

“The Lord hears the needy, and does not despise his own that are in bonds!”

Finally, at the end of each day, as we prepare for sleep, and when we review our day, we can ask God our Father to forgive us for our faults, and give Him thanks for his Presence, his help, and his love. It is as we pray that we can become conscious of the Presence of the Most Holy Trinity within us, and that we can realize that all is grace; all is gift. He shows us that we have control over nothing; so, why keep trying to carry the weight of the whole world on our shoulders, when Jesus is already taking care of that? Since all that we are, and all that comes to us, and all that we have is gift from God; we can relax, we can rest, and we can breathe.

“The Lord hears the needy, and does not despise his own that are in bonds!”

Our life on this Earth is brief. We can choose to live as if God doesn’t exist or as if He is doing nothing, and we can deny Him before humans, or we can choose to believe in Him, to trust Him, to open our eyes, our minds, and our hearts, and to welcome into our lives his Presence and his saving action. Ask to meet with a priest and allow the Lord to strengthen you in your faith. Jesus declares that it is the truth which will set us free. In the presence of the priest one can obtain God’s forgiveness but also some spiritual direction.

“The Spirit of truth will testify on my behalf, says the Lord, and you also are to testify!”

That is why it is so important for us to participate well in the Sunday Liturgy, at Holy Mass. We can prepare the day before and Sunday morning by remembering all that we have lived since our last presence at the Sacred Liturgy. We can dispose ourselves to place on the altar the offering of ourselves: our efforts during the week to live as daughters, sons of God; all that we accept to endure out of love; our trials, our sorrows, our losses, our worries, our prayers, our temptations, our disappointments, and even our sins; putting all our trust in God.

“The Spirit of truth will testify on my behalf, says the Lord, and you also are to testify!”

Mary Mother of God, St. Joseph, walk with us in the steps of Jesus. O my Jesus, I trust in You! Thank You; You who are God, the Father, + the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

In silence now, the Holy Spirit helps us to lay down our offering together with that of Jesus….

If we choose, we can live in the realm of divine love - it's up to us - and God is with us to help us. 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time - MQP Church in JLW Parish - February 20th, 2022

Homily MP3 version     Homily PDF version     What are the offerings that we bring to God? What is the meaning of "HOSANNAH!" MP3 version

(This homily was prepared but not actually delivered; so that a much more important message might be heard... then, later I recorded this homily at home for you to read and hear.)

“Bless the Lord, O my soul. The Lord is merciful and gracious!”

Brothers and sisters do you enjoy a spacious home, where you can stretch out your legs, in which you can move from one room to another, and where you can be refreshed with food and drink? Instead of this, do you suffer the constraints of a confined space, which is so small you cannot stretch out your legs, in which you cannot even stand to your full height but can only stoop and bend your back, and are unable to enjoy the food and drink which are there?

In other words, brothers and sisters, do you spend your days and nights bound to a prison cell, or do you enjoy the freedom of the children of God? Is your world painfully limited by the narrow limits of the physical dimension of life, or is your world open to the vast horizons of the spiritual dimension of life? Are you living like a slave under the harsh dictatorship of the prince of this world, or have you been set free from the tyranny of Satan by Jesus, the Son of God, who is victorious over death, has broken the devil’s reign of terror, and set free all the captives?

“Bless the Lord, O my soul. The Lord is merciful and gracious!”

If you lash out in anger against the troubles of this world, if you constantly complain about all that is missing in your life, if you never show gratitude to the people with whom you live, if you can only see what is wrong and are blind to what is right, if you are bitter about the cold or damp or heat and are unable to enjoy the beauty of the various seasons, if you make miserable your spouse, your family, your coworkers, or your neighbors, and never lift a finger to help, or never smile to affirm, or never express a kind word to bless, or never pray for any of them before God so that He might also bless them; then I hate to tell you this, but you are in prison.

“Bless the Lord, O my soul. The Lord is merciful and gracious!”

King David, before he became king, had been loved by the one who was the first king of Israel, Saul, and he was loved like a dear brother by the king’s son Jonathan. But Saul was a man living in the prison of his narrow mind, suffering the narrow confines of the physical dimension of life, unable or unwilling to put his trust in God and open himself to the vast horizons of the spiritual dimension of life. No, he trusted only in himself. He was so jealous of the young man. He was like a madman obsessed with hunting down and killing David.

David, on the other hand, was a man after God’s own heart. He was simply a man and at times did bad things, but soon after he would realize his mistake and would immediately ask the Lord to forgive him. David lived his life with complete trust in the Lord. That is why he refused to raise his hand against the one that the Lord had anointed king over Israel. He even refused to let his lieutenant Abishai raise his hand against King Saul to snuff out his life.

David did not hate Saul, but he did declare to the King that he had him in his power that night; yet, did him no harm out of love and reverence for the Lord, in whom he put his trust.

“Bless the Lord, O my soul. The Lord is merciful and gracious!”

Before Jesus came into this world to set us free, humanity was suffering the limits of the physical dimension of life, unable to live in the spiritual dimension of life. By the way He lived, by his teaching, and by his willingness to endure suffering and death, Jesus opened the way for us to be set free from the physical dimension by living in the spiritual dimension. Risen from the dead, Jesus overcame death and destroyed death’s power of fear over us. Jesus has set us free by demonstrating that God will never renounce his love for us. All that is left for us to do now is to do our best, with God’s help, to love Him back by worshipping Him and loving our neighbor.

“Bless the Lord, O my soul. The Lord is merciful and gracious!”

If we put all our trust in God, then we can do as Jesus says: “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.” Our trust in God can remove from our soul any desire to retaliate and instead enable us to offer peace. Trusting in God we can be willing to share what we have with others, without fear of having ourselves any lack of what we truly need. If we open our eyes to God’s loving care for us, and his great mercy to forgive our faults; then we can be willing to endure wrongs and patiently wait for God to deliver us. Our heart can expand to let us see that others are just as weak as we are; so, we can stop judging anyone else. Being forgiven by God every day, we can afford to forgive others all their faults against us. If we choose to live in the spiritual dimension, then God sets us free with the freedom of the children of God. We can refuse misery and choose love.

“Bless the Lord, O my soul. The Lord is merciful and gracious!”

So, it’s up to us. Jesus can’t live our life for us; every moment of every day, in every time and place, in every situation, it’s up to us. We can choose to be miserable in the narrow limits of the physical dimension, not only living in misery but making miserable everyone around us; or, we can choose to walk with Jesus, living a life of love for everyone, and enjoy the freedom of the children of God, enjoying God’s mercy, and generously showing mercy to others.

We need God’s grace. In our poverty, we pray: « O my Jesus, I trust in You! » Our Good God wants to forgive us our sins and remove from our minds, hearts, and souls every obstacle to his love, for He is God: the Father, and + the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

In silence now, the Holy Spirit will help us see what we need to surrender to the Lord.
